MMA Welding FumeMMA welding of aluminium will produce welding fume, and most of it will be particulate fume. The particulate fume from MMA welding aluminium will contain aluminium oxide plus fluorides and chlorides generated by decomposition of the electrode coating during welding. The amount of particulate fume tends to increase as the welding current increases. MMA welding tends to generate little gaseous fume and the volume of particulate fume evolved tends to help suppress formation of ozone and nitrogen oxides too. While aluminium oxide is not considered to be a major health hazard, fluorides and chlorides are irritant and corrosive and local fume extraction equipment should be used to keep exposure to a minimum. Use of respiratory protection should also be provided if necessary. |
