Welding Helmets

Personal protection is required by workers to ensure their safety when carrying out welding or cutting.

A welding helmet, or a handshield, fitted with a suitable filter lens, is required for all arc welding to protect the welder from arc radiation, sparks and spatter, heat, and any metal ejected from the weld pool.

Helmets come in different shapes and sizes. Most simply they have an oblong viewing screen into which the filter glass is fitted. Others have integral safety glass behind flip-up filter screens to enable the welder to see while carrying out grinding operations. While others are fitted with light sensitive screens that automatically darken when an arc is struck.

The welder will often choose the helmet he feels most comfortable with, but whichever type is used it should conform to national, international, or local safety standards.
