Carbon Steel

Steel forms the largest and most widely used group of structural and engineering alloys used and more steel is used in manufacturing than all other metals and alloys put together. The reason for its wide use is its relative cheapness, its strength, ductility and its ease of fabrication.

But what is 'steel'?
Steel, in very crude terms, is simply an alloy of iron and carbon, where carbon content is less than 2%. However, it is not as simple as that, and the term 'steel' doesn't describe just one alloy, but a whole series of alloys, which rarely, if ever, consist of just iron and carbon.
