Dissimilar Joints

Because of the necessity to weld titanium and its alloys in a completely inert atmosphere otherwise the welds would be embrittled by oxygen taken into the liquid weld metal, joints between titanium and other metals and alloys are extremely difficult.

Dissimilar welds, when they have to be made, are usually carried out with the aid of inserts but require highly skilled welders and the procedures are complicated and need to be strictly adhered to.

Only inert gas welding processes TIG and MIG are suitable.

Advice from titanium producers and specialists in the field is recommended for any dissimilar joint applications involving titanium.
