Welding TitaniumTitanium and most of its alloys can be welded using the MIG and TIG processes as well as the laser and electron beam. Only inert gases are used because of the reactive nature of titanium. All the unalloyed grades, alpha alloys, such as Ti-5Al-2.5 Sn and weakly stabilised beta alloys, such as Ti-6Al-4V, exhibit good weldability. Welding being carried out with the parent material in the annealed or solution treated condition. The higher strength alpha-beta alloys, such as Ti-3Al-13V-11Cr tend to be embrittled during welding but full weld strength can often be restored by post weld heat treatment. |
