MIG wires are available for a range of materials including aluminium, carbon and alloy steels, stainless steel, copper alloys, nickel alloys and titanium. Although wires are produced for all these materials the range of compositions are sometimes limited.

Wires are produced in a range of sizes from 0.6 to 2.4mm, although all diameters are not available for all materials. The most common sizes are between 0.9 and 1.2mm diameter.

MIG wires are also supplied in a number of different ways from small diameter spools, containing a few hundred metres of wire, to reels and baskets which typically contain 14 to 16kg of ferrous wire, much less, for low density materials such as aluminium.

Some types of wire, normally carbon and alloy steel, are also supplied in large specially designed drums known as 'pay-off packs' or 'mega packs'. These drums can contain up to 200kg of wire and are ideal for applications such as robotic welding as the amount of stoppage time to change reels is dramatically reduced.
