SAW
The submerged arc welding uses a range of consumables to complete a single weld. These can be split into three groups:
- Wires - submerged arc welding wires can be both solid, similar to those used for MIG welding, or tubular or cored, constructed in the same way as flux cored wires. The main difference in submerged arc welding is the diameter, which can range from 1.6 to 8mm in diameter.
- Fluxes - submerged arc fluxes fall into two basic groupings agglomerated fluxes and fused fluxes. Agglomerated fluxes are small balls of blended minerals bonded together by silicates in a similar way that the coating on a MMA electrode are made. Fused flux consists of minerals that are heated until they melt forming into a thin glassy material. After cooling this glassy material is broken up to form the fused flux.
- Metal powders - these are added to the weld area to improve the deposition rate of the process or as alloying additions to the weld.
