Gases
This section provides information on Gas and Gas Safety. Listed below is a number of Gas products available. For further information on gases and gas products, please use the links below.
- Atmospheric gases are the gases normally found in the air around us. They include air, argon, carbon dioxide, nitrogen and oxygen. Of these gases argon, oxygen and nitrogen are produced primarily by the separation of air into its constituent components. This is normally achieved by reducing the temperature of the air until each component liquefies and can be taken away. Also included with this section are two gases which are normally obtained from other sources, carbon dioxide and helium.
- Fuel gases are those which can be burned to generate flames and heat. They include acetylene, hydrogen, propane and others, all of which are used for a wide range of flame processes.
- Shielding gases are those gases used in arc welding and cutting processes to generate the arc and shield the molten metal from contamination. This group includes the Argoshield, Stainshield and Alushield range of mixtures.
- Lasing gases as the name suggests are used within the laser to generate the laser light. These premixed products often have higher purity levels and more precise compositional tolerances than normal industrial gases.
- Gases can be stored either as a compressed gas or as a liquid, which one is used is dependent on the gas type and on the amount of product required. Some gases such as acetylene have to be stored in a very specific way, in this case stored in a cylinder filled with a porous mass soaked in acetone.
- For some applications it may be necessary to connect several cylinders together to provide supply over a longer period than could be managed by a single cylinder. Some gases may be supplied individually, mixed on site and then distributed via a pipeline, providing uninterrupted supply to the point of use.
