Annealing

Annealing is a heat treatment where to material or component is heated to a high temperature to modify the microstructure. It is then cooled to room temperature.

For all materials, annealing is a treatment which softens the structure, making it easier to work, shape or form, however this softening takes place by different metallurgical processes depending on the alloy type.

There are different annealing treatments for different alloys, these produce metallurgical effects in the material, and it is important to understand the changes that this can make to the mechanical properties.
