NormalisingNormalising is a metallurgical treatment that is a form of annealing that is only carried out to steel. There are often different metallurgical reasons why normalising is needed. Normalising is basically an annealing process applied specifically to steel, and is used to refine the grain size, resulting in an increase in yield strength and toughness. It involves heating the steel to a temperature above the upper critical point followed by natural cooling in air. The temperature used for normalising depends largely upon the carbon content of the steel. |
