Normalising is basically an annealing process applied specifically to steel, and is used to refine the grain size, resulting in an increase in yield strength and toughness. It involves heating the steel to a temperature above the upper critical point followed by natural cooling in air. The temperature used for normalising depends largely upon the carbon content of the steel.
