Welding Positions

Welding may be carried out with the workpiece orientated in a variety of different positions relative to the welder. Sometimes the position in which welding must be carried out is fixed because of the size of the component. In other cases the component can be adjusted to whatever position is required.

What welding position is used can have significant impact on the cost of production so designers prefer to instruct the welder as to which welding position should be used. In the past descriptive terms such as 'downhand' or 'overhead' were often used but it was found that such terms were often open to misinterpretation.

To rectify this many of the main standards organisations looked to produce an easy to interpret system that would be simple to understand. There are two main systems in operation at present ASME/AWS and the EN and ISO. Both systems are roughly comparable and have widespread use across the world.
